This grass looking plant is a ginger root growing 15 months in a low light window.
You can see the little buds of ginger ready to be harvested.
The large piece is what was initially planted. I replanted it.
The ginger tasted fabulous. This year I am growing 10x the amount in a very sunny window, I want lots of this homegrown ginger.

My wife, a huge ginger fan, thinks this is just great. We might have to try this. Did you plant store bought ginger?
ReplyDeleteOoh that reminds me. I have some in a pot amongst mint on my bedroom ourtside window sill, which I should dig up and have a look at. It had a beautiful flower in early summer.
ReplyDeleteThe ginger looks great! Did you just plant a piece from the grocery store?
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your ginger root stock? Aren't most of the store bought stuff erradiated to prevent growth? Looks like a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI have ginger growing in my yard but I admit I've never harvested and used it, just been enjoying the blooms! I have so much catching up to do with all your new posts! Glad to see you back again!
ReplyDeleteYes the original ginger was from China and bought at a grocery store. I just bought 2 more pounds to plant here, $1.38 a pound. They already have little buds on them. It is not organic and maybe irradiated but over the years it will come clean and be sustainable.
ReplyDeleteI got the idea from www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-ginger.html
Can't wait to see a ginger flower this year since I am going to give it all my resources this time, instead of leaving it in a corner to see what it will do.
Awesome! May have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteWild ginger grows here, but it is an endangered plant. Now if only I could get avocados to grow here! Thanks for the visit. Peace

What?? Why didn't I think of that?? I've been trying forever to find a microclimate on my property for ginger and I *almost* make it. But then a freak cold spell (which I should know we have one every few years) kills the ginger. I can't believe it didn't occur to me to just grow it in a pot! Thanks and now I must go plant some ginger. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the most viewed post on my blog. Ginger is very popular. Peace
ReplyDeleteInspired. I have a rather tired looking piece of ginger in my fridge. I was just going to compost it, but now I see no harm in planting it in a pot and seeing what (if anything) happens.
