Frugal Cooking - Easy Recipe - Split Pea Soup

1 cup dried split peas
1 cup dried lentils
1 tbsp mustard (dry is best)
1 tsp paprika (or any other pepper you like)
1 tbsp molasses (brown sugar is ok)
2 carrots
1 onion
2 stalks celery
leftover ham preferably with bone
cover all with water 1/4 inch deep
salt and pepper to taste

bring to a boil on high, turn to low, stir, cover with lid let simmer on medium until tender, add salt and pepper (takes more salt than you would think)

As you can see, I used the frozen veggies put up for the winter.

Quick Cooking Tip: You don't have to soak peas or lentils before you cook them.

  2. awww too bad we weren't neighbors, what a force we would be, nothing would go to waste - i'd love to have you for lunch (even the cook needs to be cooked for sometimes, but alas when you reach this level of excellence in culinary efficiency there is no replacement easily found) peace

  5. It sounds and looks most delicious. Your recipe is a bit different than how we do it...your soup sounds better. We bought bunch of lentils that I need to start using up and this would be a good recipe for them. Very nice.:)
