This is what farming looks like in America. This is great because you can see how it really works.

Thank You For Being A Friend

I turned 45 last week. In my mind that is how old Bea was. Time turns the page whether we are ready for it or not.

Turkeys

I love turkeys too. Did you know turkeys have over 3000 feathers. Their personality is similar to a cat. They are very friendly and personable.

Suburban Food Productions

I am so pleased to see my city sister growing food. It is easy, it works the same every year, once you learn it you can help not only yourself but your neighbors too.
There are several interesting videos along the same theme on this page

Monster Vegetables

It is very surprising to learn how big vegetable plants get. The first picture is one zucchini plant. The plant was probably 4' square. Can you see the broccoli? It is growing in a 3x4 bed. click on the picture to get a better look. Peace for all

Turkeys and Chickens

I thought you read my book, lol? There is are words there about blackhead. I have included all precautions I take to keep them together. In my opinion turkeys are superior for meat than chicken, because you get more meat per death. I would rather raise a turkey to 50 pounds, (and yes they do get so big you have to cut them in half to fit in the oven) than 5 chickens to 10 pounds. To me it is all about kill per pound ration, it is my personal preference. In the picture you see my brooder box, luxurious isn't it, (my husband really loves me, he really does). For three months we put the eggs we gathered in the incubator and as they hatched we added them to the brooder. The turkeys were first born. At first I was afraid to put the new chicks with them, but my fear was unfounded. The bigger birds acted like big brothers to the little ones, and the smallest were defended by the largest against any humiliation. I was totally amazed how they all get along and you will be too! They all live together happily.

Turkeys are awesome!

Next to chickens I love turkeys. Not the silly white birds, but the black heritage birds. I had one tom for 7 years and he loved me like a cat loves you. They will defend the flock to the death. A few years ago, one very cold winter morning, I opened the coup to unusual total silence. There at the door was the tom. He was bloody and ripped up, both his legs were broken from giving chase and fighting off the raccoon in the deep snow. He had waited for my arrival, to see it's bravery, and died in my arms, he had protected chicken and turkey in the coup. Animals and birds have a life every second they are alive, just like people, their capacity for loyalty, bravery, justice and joy are just as equal. Peace for all

btw - the pictures should be in reverse order, watching the little ones climb on my little one - peace

Did you know I love chickens?!

In my many days I have cared for many birds. It started with a blue budgie, Buddy, who as a teenager would ride on my shoulder when i went bike riding. Then there was her girl friend who was called Canary. Why you may ask? She was a yellow budgie and would follow my dog around on the carpet picking up seeds he would shed from outside, one the dog accidentally (we all so it happen) turned and stepped on her tail. From there parakeets, raised families of finches, doves, and even a lovely Patagonian Concure but my favorite by far are chicken hens. Get to know them and you become their favorite too. I write some about chicken antics in my book but it needs to be said right here and now it is very easy to raise chickens and have fresh eggs everyday. There is no need for recreational birds in my life now and my chickens and turkeys work for their place here, and without them my place here would lack the joy they bring to it. World meet food, food meet world, love each other. Peace for all

This is wonderful! You both should be very proud. And so clean and manicured, loved land for sure. You are where you are to be, you are going to where you are to be. No matter what land is in front of you to use to make your family more secure you will use it. Nothing is too late for you, you are ahead of the crowd that is why the future looks so bewildering. My husband and I moved 11 times before we could afford a place of our own. Each time he built raised beds for my garden and fencing for birds or goats. Each time the expense and time was a personal sacrifice as we left everything. It was also our education, to which a person can never really attribute a monetary value. Your girls are watching and learning too and you are setting a very fine example. Thanks for sharing the pictures, I would be so proud to have you as a neighbor. Peace for all

I did love the near sighted analogy. Made me think of this ditty I wrote last summer:

Could life be seen as a raft floating down a river on its way to the great ocean.

Living we can fear getting snagged by the bushes on the edges, be uncertain of those who ride with us and anxious of the turbulence which may lie ahead for us. Inadvertently in ignorance, selfishness and panic we're lured by attractive little streams that promise what appears to be a shortcut or an easier way. Inevitably, unfortunately and naturally we always have to come back to our rightful place on the river. Why is it somehow the stream back is never quite as alluring?

But we are not the raft, we are the river.

Not my best work, I was trying to play with the rhythm of the words here and it got too wordy, but I do like the sentiment. I love how creativity is magic even to the artist. Peace for all.
