Tree Porn for the Butterflies

I grew up on the vacant prairies so everyday here in the BC woods is magically beautiful. It still amazes me to see 100' trees and I look at them everyday. Today was 15 degrees above normal. We have no snow left. This is 6 weeks ahead of the norm. Am not sure whether I should plant or not. A frost could come when the trees and bushes bud and take my fruit crops. I wonder about the perennials and trees in the southern United States and whether they will survive the long periods of snow.

  1. It is so beautiful where you are! Most of our trees here in the south take the freezing weather fine, though some of them break under the strain of heavy ice and snow.I did noticed that when I went into Houston that they lost a lot of their non native, more tropical, landscaping plants. We got down in the teens for awhile, not even close to normal for here!It is funny ,us in the south still being so cold and you in Canada having such warm! Take care~Melodie

  3. I worry about the same thing! Our zone was changed to zone 8 a couple of years ago, but I erred on the safe side and stuck to our old planting guidelines for 7b, and I am glad I did! Many of the residents here who jumped on the tropical plant zone 8-10 bandwagon are going to be very disappointed this spring, and that's an expensive mistake! No palm trees here, I live in the Mid-Atlantic and chose to keep my landscaping native to the area, hopefully my losses won't be as great.

  4. I would be cautious about planting. Every spring we get antsy, plant, and then have to replant. FWIW

  5. Oh I am so happy I found your blog ! we are in winnipeg but my family is from lake winnipeg .I can't imagine either being on the prairie . We so want to buy a property in the boreal forest and try living like our ancestors did ! I am going to show ds14 the pickled eggs ! I'd love to know if you are finding the damp an issue ? I have arthritus and am very effected by the rain or cloudy days so MB is nice for me however cold does bother my ailments as well . I've heard some parts of BC are not damp .
anyway I look forward to your posts . Thanks .

  7. You do have some lovely trees surrounding you. For me it’s still too early to plant anything outside, now it’s not that cold, but it could snow again, so you never know...

  8. I can't remember a winter like this, we have had almost no snow at all...a very nice change. It's such a strange sight to see bare ground this time of year. Like you I have my fingers crossed that this weather does not backfire on us and mess up the fruit trees.

  9. Thanks for the imput! I agree with you all and will not be sowing, except maybe a cabbage or peas. The self-sown greens, kale and dandelions are very welcome. Looks like we are all going to stay the course, I have a feeling it is going to be a bumpy ride for those who don't. Peace for all

  10. Ah, I'm so jealous. We moved from Vancouver Island to Prince Edward Island two years ago and that's one thing that gets me - it takes forever for spring to arrive.
Isn't BC beautiful? Every part of it.
    Love your garden.

  13. O my Coco you would be welcome here in a heartbeat. What fun we would have with my organic meats and garden and my huge smoker. Makes me drool just thinking about it. I am on a lake 300 miles with no industry so the fish are divide. Would fishing appeal to your other half? Did you find out if they chose you yet? When were you here last? Where did you? Being sick makes the winter drag on - hope your better soon. Peace
