Grapes

Hi there - thought I would answer here. Grapes are really a no brainer crop. They need full sun, and little to no fertilizer each season. They do not need to be pruned, although I do cut them back as they are picked. The trick with grapes is finding the right variety for the length of summer you have. There are 9 varieties here and 1 never ripens fully. I am in zone 6. They really do grow and live as easily as trees. My green seedless grapes are called Himrod. I did find this link, but will post more to my blog this winter for you. I take hardwood cuttings in the winter and end up with many, many starts, too bad I can't send them over the border. Peace

  2. I'm glad you named your seedless grape variety as we have been thinking about looking for a hardy seedless one. I will keep Himrod in mind.

  3. Zone 6! We are in zone 2! I don't think that there are any varieties that will grow here. You are very fortunate!

  4. I have never had trouble with deer, but then again there is the pitbull :) The turkeys raid the vines where they can, which shakes the grapes down to the chickens, they eat grapes and apples at their leisure for October and November. The wild birds and squirrels do too. Concords are super easy to grow too, and the juice is sublime! Peace

  5. Just got back in town from visiting soggy Seattle. Did you get snow from the pineapple express or rain? Hey .. thanks for the link and the info about how easy grapes are to grow. I have a perfect spot that gets full sun and has semi poor soil .. will have to figure out how deter the deer and moose though :) Happy to ready that you don't need to be fussy with their growth/pruning ... cuz the articles I've read make the pruning seem difficult .. or like I'd need to have a hands on demo.

    Thanks again!

  6. Cathy we got the rain, it poured for hours. How is it where you are? We are lucky not to have been in eastern Canada, many community declared states of emergency, lots of roads washed out or blizzards, flooding and power outages too. Yea though I walk through the valley . . . peace
