Frugal Food Security - Freezing Food

If you power source is secure, freezing is the best way to preserve food. Cut vegetables into small pieces. Press into a freezer bag removing all the air. "Freezer" bags are thicker than "storage" bags. If you don't use a freezer bag, the dry cold will dehydrate your food in a way to make it unpalateable.

This is tomato sauce, lay it flat so it takes up less room.

This is beans cut into single recipe portions, for soups etc.
Ziplock freezer bags are expensive, and twist tie bags aren't easy to get airtight. For the optimum protection, with the least amount of waste and expense I have found this inexpensive vacuum sealer.

  1. I don't freeze very much, but I do use a vacuum sealer.I mostly can, even though it is a hot process. With the hurricanes I don't want to risk my food supply,we could be out of power for weeks if we get a big one. I do freeze small amounts of things, that I know we will eat in a reasonable amount of time.Of course the meat gets frozen, but I can most of the chickens.I am keeping my fingers crossed this when Hubby retires we can move away from this coastal area!

  2. I have a food sealer to, I just don't use it as often as I should. I like to freeze items as well, but this harvest season I am going to do more drying.

  4. Melodie what a hard worker you are! It must be unnerving at times to be at the mercy of so many environmental factors! We were so lucky to live here, knowing we are here until the end takes a lot of pressure off. When is retirement? Where are you looking? Hope it is warming up for you. It has been raining here for 4 days straight, we have been 10 degrees about freezing for over a week. Last year at this time we had 6 feet of snow and 15 degrees below freezing. Peace
